Sadly, we’ve all been there: having taken precious time off work to have an installation, maintenance or repairs done around the home, only to have the tradesman leave you hanging around for hours or not showing up at all.
Then there are the countless sorry scenarios that play out on our national current affairs shows each night, where hardworking consumers have been taken for a ride by rip-off merchants who leave behind a trail of despair thanks to unfinished or shonky work.
It gets your blood boiling and there’s nothing you can do about it, right?
With a bit of careful planning, you can usually guarantee yourself a smooth ride through the often complex task of hiring a trustworthy and reliable tradie.
Not just that, you can find one you can trust to do the job right and not rip you off.
Word of mouth
A recommendation from friends or family is always a good start. If they rave about their tradie’s punctuality, trustworthiness, friendly and professional manner, cleanliness and dedication to doing the job right, it’s a great start.
Failing that, a company with a good reputation for great service will always have a swag of five-star Google reviews up its sleeve.
Cheapest isn’t best
For specialised jobs such as electrical, gas and plumbing, make sure you find a licensed professional.
These are definitely not jobs for the jack-of-all-trades types you find on Facebook or Air Tasker.
Your family’s safety is way too important to gamble on the word of Dodgy Dave the DIYer – no matter how cheap the quote.
It pays to ring around and get at least three quotes. A ridiculously cheap one usually smacks of desperation, while an exorbitantly high one may be a sign of a contractor trying it on to take advantage of your inexperience. Buyer beware!
Ask your tradie these questions for peace of mind
- How quickly will you do the job and what steps will you take to ensure the process is hassle-free?
- Can I get a written quote?
- Is everyone on the job a licenced professional?
- Do you issue Compliance Certificates with your work?
- Will your tradies arrive on the job with all essential common parts?
- Do you supply and install high-quality products from leading manufactures? Who are they?
- How long have you been in business?
- What processes are in place if I’m not satisfied with the work?
- What insurance do you have and what does it cover (public liability and warranty insurance at a minimum)?
- What after-job care do you provide?
- How do you go above and beyond for customers?
