Is your hot-water system displaying these symptoms? It may need replacing before winter

How to tell if your hot-water system needs replacing

When you think about it, us Aussies are so fortunate to have the convenience and comfort of scalding hot water at the turn of a tap.

So many of us enjoy our hot showers, run bubble baths for the kids, or cook and clean with barely a thought for where that life-changing hot water comes from.

Our hot-water systems are one of the most under-appreciated major appliances in the home. They are our unsung domestic heroes – until they stop working, that is!

Here in Melbourne, where temperatures can drop during the bleak winter months, a hot-water system breakdown just doesn’t wash.

And with hot-water systems having an average lifespan of 8-12 years, many readers may be facing this possibility.

So to position you ahead of any mid-winter disaster, we’ve put together a list of telling symptoms that indicate your hot-water system may need replacing.

How to tell if your hot-water system needs replacing

Constant breakdowns of your hot-water system: When your HWS hits its last legs and is getting on in years, frequent repairs often become a fact of life. Not only is this inconvenient, but it’s expensive, too! In this situation, your best bet is usually to retire your system gracefully and upgrade to a new one.

Bangs, clangs and rumbling: If the tank on your hot-water system starts making any of these noises, it’s time to get in the experts. These sounds could be a sign of sediment buildup (which causes corrosion and leaks), but often mean that an ageing or tired heater needs replacing.

Your energy bills are higher: An ageing unit tends to run less efficiently, meaning it is working much harder to get the job done. This means it will draw more power, costing you hard-earned dollars and the environment.

Your water isn’t getting hot: If the water from your hot-water tap is now only lukewarm or cool, you could have a problem. Have you had an increase in demand, perhaps with more people living in the house than usual? If so, your existing system may simply not be big enough to cope.  Otherwise, your heating element could be burnt out. Best to call in the professionals for an expert diagnosis!

Your hot-water tank is leaking: This is one of the most obvious clues that your hot-water system needs replacing. Those puddles and visible leaks are not a good sign – and you risk a serious flood if you don’t act to replace your system. Sadly, unlike leaking valves, a leaking tank cannot be repaired and an upgrade is the only solution.

Your hot water looks, tastes or smells weird: Does your hot water smell and taste metallic? If you’re not sure, you can try comparing it to a drink of cool water from the tap. Hot water that has a metallic taste is a sign of corrosion inside the tank of your hot-water system. A worn heating element could also be to blame. And if your hot water contains visible signs of rust or corrosion, your water heater may be on its last legs. This needs to be addressed urgently, because rusty water will also damage your plumbing and other appliances, such as your washing machine and dishwasher.

Your drain valve is blocked: A build-up of sediment in the bottom of your hot-water system tank will happen over a period of time. This can cause the tank’s interior to break down, clogging your drain valve and potentially leading to leaks. Again, this is your time to call in the experts for a professional diagnosis, but it is likely your system’s heater needs to be replaced.
