Smoke Detector Installation FAQs
Hard-wired smoke detectors must be installed by a licensed electrician. Battery-operated smoke alarms can be fitted by a homeowner, but an electrician will ensure correct placement and connection - which is particularly important for interconnected alarm systems.
In Victoria, smoke alarms are required on every storey of a home, in every corridor or hallway connected to a bedroom, and in any room used for sleeping. Our electricians will assess your property layout and recommend the correct number and placement to meet requirements.
Photoelectric smoke alarms are widely recommended as they are more effective at detecting slow, smouldering fires - the most common type in residential properties. We supply and install photoelectric models as standard. Ionisation-only alarms are no longer recommended for most residential applications.
Smoke alarms have a lifespan of around 10 years from manufacture. After this point the sensing chamber degrades and the unit should be replaced regardless of whether it appears to be working. Check the manufacture date on the back of your alarm - if it is more than 10 years old, it is time to replace it.
Yes. Under Victorian law, landlords must ensure smoke alarms are installed and in working order at the start of each tenancy and throughout the rental period. Landlords are responsible for replacing faulty or expired alarms. Tenants should test alarms regularly and notify the landlord if one is not working.
