IT’S one of the unsung heroes of the home, responsible for keeping wet areas well ventilated and free of nasties like mould. Yet if you were asked to buy a bathroom exhaust fan tomorrow, would you know what to look for?

Most people wouldn’t and that’s not going to be a problem, until you find yourself faced with a choice that could prove costly. Because when you have a device that’s responsible for keeping us warm while also keeping the bathroom moisture free, many things can quickly go wrong.

What is a bathroom exhaust fan?

Whether you are part of a big family or you live solo, having an exhaust fan installed in the bathroom ceiling is essential for keeping control of the steam, heat and humidity generated by your hot shower.

When steam, heat and humidity are allowed to linger in a room, you run the risk of health issues and damage to the structure of your home.

A 3-in-1 bathroom exhaust fan will improve airflow, provide ventilation and reduce humidity. This is all essential to the prevention of mould and mildew, which are dangerous to health but particularly risky to children with asthma, cystic fibrosis and the vulnerable elderly.

With a bathroom exhaust fan, the capacity is important

You’d never buy an air conditioning system that was too large or small for a living space, and bathroom exhaust fans are the same.

A bathroom exhaust fan that is too small will be totally underwhelming in its performance. Yet if you buy a bathroom exhaust fan that is too big, you’ll be tormented by the noise every time it is on.

To determine the capacity of the bathroom exhaust fan you’ll be requiring, you’ll first have to measure the size of your bathroom in metres (height, width and length). Once you have these three measurements, you’ll need to multiply them. For example, a bathroom that 3m long by 3m high by 2m wide is 18m3. You then multiply it by how many air changes your bathroom needs.

A bathroom without a shower, such as a powder room, needs around 6-8 air changes per hour. A bathroom with a shower needs 15-20 air changes. This final number will give you the capacity you need for your bathroom. So, assuming our example needs 15 air changes by hour, we get 270m3/h. As a result, we would look for 3-in-1 exhaust fans with a capacity of at least 270m3/hr.

When installing your bathroom exhaust fan, call in the experts

When it comes to electrical installations and repairs in the wet areas of your home, you should always call in a licenced electrician.

Also, choosing the right location for your exhaust fan can be just as important as the capacity size that was discussed earlier.

Our electricians know that it is important to vent the air ourside of home – not just redirect it into your roof space. Otherwise, you’re just redirecting the problem of heat, moisture and humidity to another area of your house.
