A ducted split, just like a split system, consists of an outdoor compressor unit along with an indoor unit. Instead of the unit using a wall mounted indoor unit, it uses an in-ceiling unit, with ducts that attach to ceiling or wall registers.

A ducted split air conditioning system is able to heat or cool certain areas of your home (Called Zones), or the entire house at one single time if you wish.

Ducted Split – How They Work

A Ducted split is an air conditioning system that uses ductwork inside the roof or under the floor to distribute air throughout the house. It comprises of an Indoor Unit and an Outdoor Compressor. The two units are connected by refrigerant pipes and electrical cabling.
The Ducted Split Outdoor Compressor is placed on the outside of your home, usually on the side of the house where it cannot be seen. The outdoor compressor is connected to the indoor unit via electrical cables and refrigerant pipes. The Outdoor Compressor pressurises the refrigerant gasses, which is the key to creating either heating or cooling from your Ducted Split Air Conditioner.
The Ducted Split Indoor unit is placed on the inside of the house, either under your floor or inside your ceiling, and is connected to the outdoor unit. The indoor unit depressureises the refrigerant and uses a fan coil to distribute the air through the area it is installed in, via strategically placed outlets throughout your home.
Much like a Ducted Heater, a Ducted Split uses a ‘Return Air’ Grill which recycles the air in your house, instead of having your door and windows open like an Evaporative Cooling system.

Ducted Split – Zone Information

A ducted split has the ability to be ‘Zoned’. A zone allows you to turn off certain areas of the system when not in use, in order to save power and money. A zone can be your bedroom areas, living room, bathroom or any combination of rooms that you desire!
Typically, you need to have a ‘Common Zone’ on your Ducted Split System. This common zone is an area that is ‘always on’, to be able to prevent any damage to a ducted reverse cycle unit if all the zones are accidently turned off.
Plum have several types of zone controllers that can be used with a Ducted Split System. There is a ‘manual system’ which turns the zones on and off via a switchpad, or a new ‘Comfort Home Controller System’. The Comfort System is a digital smart zone sytem that uses a ‘relief zone’ if all the zones are turned off. This means that you can now disregard a common zone, and turn your rooms on and off as you please, in any combination, Saving you money on your next power bill!
